Net-Keyboard for Android: Using your computer's keyboard to type

How does it work?

It is quite difficult to enter a lot of text on mobile phones. Now, with this software you can do it quickly:
  1. Run a small utility program on your computer and input the text there.
  2. Run a special input method on the mobile phone that will receive the text.
  3. Click Enter in that utility program and the text will be sent to the mobile phone.

Features

  • The program will automatically locate the phone on the same network (WiFi).
  • They will perform mutual authentication and encrypt the transmission.
  • All languages are supported including English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.
  • When you're typing on the computer, the mobile phone will be kept awake (for 10 seconds) and the screen won't dim.
  • Multiple people can access their own phones in the same office without interfering with one another.

Setup instruction

On the mobile phone

  1. Install the mobile app (for Android only). If you are a Macau resident, you can get it for free here.
  2. Choose Settings | Language and keyboard and enable the Net Keyboard Input Method.
  3. In the same screen, choose the next entry to configure the Net Keyboard Input Method. Enter a password of your choosing (let's say it is "xxx-yyy-zzz").

On the computer

  1. Download this jar file onto your computer. You need Java for it to work. If you don't have Java, click here.
  2. Run that jar file by doube clicking it. That's for Windows. On Mac OS, see here. On Linux, just run "java -jar netkb.jar".
  3. The first time it is run, it will prompt you for the password. Use the one you set above ("xxx-yyy-zzz"). This is to encrypt the text to be transmitted.
You can set up multiple computers (e.g., one at home and one at office) the same way. This way, no matter where you are, you can use a computer near-by to input text into your mobile phone.

Usage

When you need to input some text on the mobile phone:
  1. On the mobile phone, long press the text field and then choose the Net Keyboard Input Method.
  2. Run that utility program and type the desired text there.
  3. Press Enter or click OK in the utility program. It will send the text to the phone and proceed to the next text field.

Change log

  • v1.0: initial release
  • v1.1:
    • Added: The keep awake feature.
